Can I fix a Washtower® cabinet to a plasterboard wall?

Yes, you can, provided the cabinet is fixed firmly to the load-bearing structure behind it. It is not safe to fix a Washtower® cabinet into plasterboard alone.

A washing machine and dryer cause vibration and dynamic loading during the spin cycle. Combined with the weight of the cabinet and the appliances, these forces can work a plasterboard-only fixing loose over time.

For a safe installation we therefore advise always fixing the cabinet to a solid structure behind the wall, such as timber studs or a solid wall. That way the cabinet is properly anchored and the construction stays safe and stable.

Our advice: not directly into the plasterboard

We therefore advise against anchoring the cabinets directly into the plasterboard. The safest and most durable solution is to fix into a solid, load-bearing structure behind the plasterboard, such as timber joists, metal studs or battens behind the wall.

Why does this matter?

• Loading and vibration – during use, and certainly during the spin cycle, the fixing takes a heavy, dynamic load. Plugs in plasterboard can gradually work loose as a result.

• Lasting stability – anchoring into a load-bearing structure prevents the cabinet coming loose over time or the plasterboard crumbling around the fixing point.

How to find the studs

Use a stud finder to locate the timber or metal studs behind the plasterboard; these are usually 40 or 60 cm apart. Are the studs not in the right place? Then first fit a solid horizontal timber batten across several studs and fix the cabinet to that. Drill through the plasterboard into the stud without the hammer function, to avoid damage.
