What is the best way to measure up the laundry room for a washing machine cabinet?

For a washing machine cabinet that fits properly, it is important to measure the whole laundry room accurately. Always measure from the finished floor and allow for skirting, pipes, sockets, the tap and the waste outlet.

Measure width, depth and height at several points

  • Width: measure the distance between the walls or side panels at several heights (for example at knee and eye level) and note the smallest measurement. Walls are rarely perfectly straight. Also allow for the thickness of any skirting boards and subtract that from the width available.

  • Depth: measure from the back wall to where the cabinet is allowed to come. Allow 10 to 15 cm of extra room for the water and electrical connections, the hoses and the tap, so they do not kink.

  • Height: measure from the floor to the ceiling, or to the top of any wall units, at three points (left, middle, right) and use the smallest measurement. Floors and ceilings are not always level.

Measure your washing machine and dryer too

Before you choose a cabinet, it helps to know the exact dimensions of your appliances:

  • Measure the height, width and depth of your washing machine, and of the dryer if you want to install that as well.

  • Decide whether you want the appliances side by side or stacked. Stacking saves floor space but calls for more height.

  • Note these measurements down – you need them to calculate the right allowances.

Allow for extra room and clearances

  • Sides: allow at least 2 cm on each side for vibration during the spin cycle.

  • Back: keep 10 to 15 cm free for hoses, waste and connections.

  • Top: allow at least a few centimetres of clearance to make installation easier.

Also note where the tap, the waste outlet and the socket are.

Check the doorway and the floor

Do not forget to check the doorway: both the cabinet and the washing machine have to fit through comfortably. Also check that the doors of the washing machine, dryer and cabinet can open fully without hitting walls or obstacles. Finally, put a spirit level on the floor; a flat, stable surface is essential to prevent vibration. If the floor is not completely level, you take that up with the cabinet's adjustable feet.
