How big does a laundry room need to be as a minimum?
The minimum size of a laundry room depends on how you want to position your washing machine and dryer. For a dryer on the washing machine you need at least 67 x 170 cm (W x H), while appliances side by side call for at least 134 x 85 cm (W x H). If you choose a washing machine cabinet from Washtower®, you save space and gain comfort: less bending, better organisation and our distinctive cabinet-in-cabinet construction with a continuous base plate. What is more, every Washtower® washing machine cabinet fits in virtually any laundry room, even a compact one.
Minimum dimensions per setup
Below you will find an overview of the space you need, depending on your situation:
Dryer on the washing machine
Minimum size (width x depth): 67 x 65 cm
Minimum height: 185 cm
Appliances side by side
Minimum size (width x depth): 134 x 65 cm
Minimum height: 146 cm
A single appliance with storage
Minimum size (width x depth): 67 x 65 cm
Minimum height: 146 cm
These measurements assume standard washing machines and dryers with a width of 60 cm and a depth of 50 to 60 cm. Bear in mind that you need at least 60 to 90 cm of movement space in front of the appliances to load and unload comfortably and open the doors fully.
What to consider when fitting out your laundry room
A well fitted laundry room comes down to practical use and safety. So keep an eye on these points:
Movement space: allow 60 to 90 cm of free space in front of the machines, so you can work comfortably and open the doors fully.
Ventilation and clearance: keep at least 2 to 5 cm free on all sides around the appliances, for ventilation and to absorb vibration. Washtower® washing machine cabinets have ventilation grilles as standard and provide the right amount of room around the machine.
Depth for connections: a standard machine is 55 to 60 cm deep (measured between the feet). Add 5 to 10 cm at the back for hoses and plugs. Washtower® washing machine cabinets have 5 cm of space in the cabinet for connections as standard, and with the wall brackets the cabinets can be placed about 5 cm from the wall, which creates roughly 10 cm for the connections.
Height with a dryer on the washing machine: for a safe and stable stacked setup, a minimum height of 185 cm is required. Washtower® washing machine cabinets have an anti-tip device for extra safety.
Which setups are there?
You can fit out your laundry room in several ways, depending on the space available and your wishes:
Dryer on the washing machine: this setup saves a lot of floor space and is ideal for smaller rooms. With a cabinet for a dryer on the washing machine you get a stable, safe setup with less bending and more comfort.
Appliances side by side: if you have more room, you can place both appliances next to each other. That is handy if you want to use both machines at the same time. Consider washer and dryer cabinets for a well organised and ergonomic setup.
A single appliance with storage: if you only have a washing machine or a dryer, combine it with storage cabinets for detergent, towels or other laundry supplies.
A complete cabinet wall: would you like to fit out your laundry room completely, with extra storage and an integrated setup? Then put a complete cabinet wall together easily using our online configurator.
What suits your situation?
The ideal size of your laundry room depends on your personal wishes and the space available. Ask yourself these questions:
How much space do you have? Measure your laundry room and compare it with the minimum dimensions per setup.
Do you want to save space? Then choose a dryer on the washing machine with a washing machine cabinet that provides stability and comfort.
Do you need extra storage? Combine your washing machine cabinet with storage cabinets, or choose a modular setup that grows with your needs.
Would you like more comfort and less bending? Consider a washing machine stand that puts your washing machine at an ergonomic height of 60 cm.
